Level Apartment
The gut renovation of this small two-bedroom apartment in the Upper Westside of Manhattan, completely transformed the experience and functionality of the space from a cramped post-war apartment into a light filled spacious loft. The existing bedroom walls have been removed and replaced with large floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. This allows the client the flexibility to change the space as needed from a large one-bedroom suite with exposure on three sides, to an intimate two-bedroom as the family grows over time.
To maximize space-efficiency and natural light, the kitchen has been opened up to the living room. A simple material palette of matte-black, warm walnut, white and deep blue was used throughout. Custom oil-rubbed walnut millwork hides all appliances as well as a flexible small office and storage room, while blacken-steel shelves were designed to frame the terrace entrance. The spa-like bathroom contrasts the airiness of the apartment, creating a dark and serene getaway. The all-black fixtures provided a subtle luxury without distracting from the simplicity of the unified black Pietra D'Avola recycled stone floor and walls. The white solid surface sink is custom designed and milled to disappear in the countertop, stripped of everything but the bare essentials.
Much consideration was given to the durability, renewability, and embodied energy in material choices. The kitchen countertops, backsplash and upper cabinets are made of a 100% recycled black paperstone. The floors are made of a Brushed Pearl bamboo manufactured to be three times harder and more resilient than traditional red oak flooring. The bathroom walls and floors are made of Lithoverde, a natural limestone comprised of 99% post-industrial recycled material. In consideration to health, allergies and chemical sensitivities, only natural and non-VOC paints were used.
