The airport is named after Alexei Leonov, born in the village of Listvyanka, Kemerovo region, the first cosmonaut to go into outer space. The connection with this legendary compatriot predetermined the “cosmic” appearance of the new terminal, both outside and inside. The key element of the facade is a remote canopy covering the main entrance area. The triangular opening in the visor resembles the letter L, which together with the other letters forms the word “Leonov”. The spaceship-like rebated metal canopy contrasts effectively with the building's glass envelope.
The interior space of the terminal continues the space theme, creating the effect of open space. The key element of the interior was 7 thousand lamps, smoothly flickering like the starry sky. Among them floats a copy of the Voskhod-2 ship, on which Leonov made his exit. The dark range of finishing materials supports the effect of endless interstellar space surrounding passengers.
