The project reconciles two conflicting requirements by the artist - a place of solitude and emptiness (the studio) and a place of gathering and socialization (the terrace). These opposing desires problematize the architecture. Excavated earth is used to create the ground conditions for the subterranean and private nature of the studio, and the more exposed place of gathering. Landscape is used as an active material generating the stance and experience of the project. The building gradually reveals itself through a set choreography of spaces from the arrival to the studio and terrace. The modified ground plane allows for a multitude of ways to experience and traverse the building. It perceptually enlarges the project beyond the actual 1200sqft footprint.
