A new facility houses two
distinct programs which significantly contribute to Indiana University’s
reputation as a center for arts and culture: the acclaimed Department of
Theatre & Drama and the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. Forming part of
the University’s Performing Arts Precinct, the new building connects with
Indiana University Auditorium and the Musical Arts Center and links the student
residence halls to the University’s academic core.
On the east side of the new Center, the primary
performance spaces—a 450-seat proscenium theater, and a 250-seat experimental
theater and choral hall—are unified with a single lobby facing the public
street. The entrances for both the Department of Theater & Drama and the
Neal-Marshall Education Center are located on the west side of the building.
This wing connects directly with the University Auditorium and forms a
courtyard which is open to the adjacent wooded landscape and is linked to the
pedestrian campus paths. The existing Department spaces in the Auditorium are renovated and connected to the new building to create a unified facility. In 2010, the original theater will be restored to become a 350-seat lecture hall and film venue. Floors will be added into the original stagehouse to create a new studio theater.
