The architectural design reinterprets the modernist tenement house of the interwar period. The art deco style and materials help revoke restoring the high standard from back then. Therefore, the wayfinding is also inspired by the art deco style, present in the architecture of that period in the form of geometric reliefs and typography. The elements of the XXL scale are the 3d layers, with no color differentiation from the background. Simply white on white. They are therefore only visible through the shadow cast by each layer of the relief, creating unusual three-dimensional effects straight from art deco period.
The most prestigious elements are in the representative staircase. The prefabricated elevator portals with these concave number carvings are made of Corian – a quartz conglomerate, an extremely durable and expensive material resembling artificial stone. The second staircase, finished with wooden veneer, received convex markings, also made of Corian, visible directly from the stairs and the elevator.
In the patio space, residents and their guests are led to staircases A and B through reliefs embedded in the external walls. The decorative accent is the bicycle storage sign – a geometrical relief, depicting a cyclist made only of several triangles and circles, embedded in the wall.
The garage space is always less prestigious by definition. However, it doesn't have to be boring nor obvious. Therefore, the signs of staircases entrances use the layered motif and the letters A and B, but use only flat painting, giving the illusion of spatial sculpture by painting the very shape of the shadows of each of the alleged layers.
Objectives and results:
Wayfinding was designed at an early stage of the architecture design, which made it possible to propose signage integrated with the architecture (concave reliefs), and not giving the effect of ‘boards’ glued to the buildings post factum… The challenge was to convince the investor to such an individual solution – significantly more expensive, but incomparably increasing the quality of the space and its perception as prestigious. This meets the goals of the investor who directs the investment to wealthier clients.
The design challenge was to keep the idea of architecture design consistent with that of wayfinding design. That is why the wayfinding project is inspired by the same era (art deco) as architecture is, but it took other elements from it: in interwar modernism, the cooperation of architects and graphic artists was customary, the effects of which can be seen in the old architecture enriched with carefully designed sculptural detail, lettering, mosaics, or reliefs. It is exactly the relief that has been taken out and implemented in wayfinding project.
Scope of the signage project:
patio with public functions, staircases, hall, sauna & gym, underground garage, technical functions.
Staircases and patios are marked with dimensional XXL digits made of Corian (artificial stone). The numbers of apartments, additional or technical rooms, and horizontal navigation through the corridors were designed as brass elements. They integrate stylized retro typography with information about the direction (arrows). The warm color palette of the brass signs corresponds with the wooden finishing of the prestigious interior.
