Perched on a hillside overlooking Mount Washington, the Lavell Residence was designed to maximize square footage and to be in dialogue with the surrounding landscape. This is achieved by cascading the structure down the slope, and carving a double height space in the living room to allow its inhabitants to catch stunning views from various levels. To relate to the two adjacent homes’ roof heights, our proposal was to create a hybrid roof that is shaped between a flat and ‘A” frame, with an open trellis wrapping the rear facade. The use of large floor to ceiling windows allow ample doses of natural light into the home, while the decks on every level maximizes square footage, granting visual access to the area’s surroundings.
