The Lauriston Housing Redevelopment project brings high quality contemporary housing to the centre of Basingstoke.
The brownfield site lies on the edge of the town centre between long standing residential properties and
the commercial centre. The scheme provides 64 mixed tenure flats arranged within four separate blocks on a narrow urban site. The arrangement of the blocks in terraced streets which open out into small courtyards has been designed to allow good surveillance, and to maximise
sunlight within the site. The result is an attractive
sequence of shared external spaces.
The architecture is based on a simple palette of materials,
with restrained elegant facades and simple robust detailing. Materials were chosen for long life, low maintenance and high quality. Amongst the 64 dwellings created, there is a range of unit types. Flats were designed to be compliant with the latest design guides and standards of best practice such as Lifetime Homes and the Housing Corporation Scheme Development Standards. A key element of the scheme in terms of planning policy
was to encourage use of public transport, therefore only a limited number of parking spaces were provided. Other environmental aspects of the scheme include: permeable
paving to deal with all the surface run-off water on the site, a highly insulated building envelope, and a passive
ventilation system. The development has won two civic awards for design
and layout. The scheme was also shortlisted for both an RIBA Award
