23, prilaz baruna Filipovića, Zagreb, Croatia

YEAR
2011
SIZE
100,000 sqft - 300,000 sqft
The riding arena built in 1910 as a part of the Austro-Hungarian Cavalry Barracks is transformed into new art space in Zagreb. It houses exhibition space on 1350 m2 and offices of the Filip Trade Company on 500 m2. Being a protected cultural monument, its historical characteristics are preserved, but it is adapted to the specific needs of contemporary artworks exhibitions. Facades are black, transforming a hundred-year-old building into a black monolith.
Architects Alenka Gačić-Pojatina, Branka Petković and Ana Krstulović won on architectural competition by invitation in 2007, and Morana Vlahović designed the interior and parts of the exterior in 2010 – 2011.
