Larnaca Under Shadow
Larnaca is a seaside city, one of the major of Cyprus and a nodal tourist destination. With an average temperature of 29 degrees in summer months, Larnaca’s most precious feature is shadow.
The project consisted of two quite interesting factors: The first was its site. At the place of the old demolished market and at the heart of the old city, just a few minutes walking distance from the sea as well as from the famous monument of Aghios Lazaros temple. The second was its demanding programme. The brief asked for the combination of three different programmes in one site: a covered market, an open-air market and a municipal parking space.
It was obvious to us from the beginning that the disadvantage of the three different programmes should be turned into an advantage. We were given the opportunity to mix three programmes and see what combinatory new hibrid programmes could emerge out of that mix: a parking market? A marketing parking? Public uses in a parking space? A car driving through a market?
For that reason we developed the idea of a canopy that hovers upon the three programmes. The canopy would satisfy the idea of a shadowed –and not enclosed- space that we primarily had on the one hand and on the other it would allow the three programmes to mix freely and seamlessly
