LAPPSET INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION - Community Carton
The egg carton is an incredibly versatile form. Its primary purpose is obviously for the safe storage and nurturing transportation of eggs, however, in an age of recycling it can be used as a way of raising baby seeds for herbs and vegetables in domestic gardening. It is this environmental consciousness and versatility that has lead to the egg carton becoming the principle behind my design concept.
Playgrounds are not just about children, but are a community within themselves. People relax, laugh, read, gaze, and enjoy life’s lighter side. These activities cannot therefore, simply be expressed in one dimension, but need to become a three dimensional landscape. This then becomes a place where a range of diverse activities can be watched and enjoyed from numerous vantage points, irrespective of age and mobility.
This scheme attempts to offer its users the simple poetics that comes with a playground. It offers sun, shade, a range of activities, both playful and calming. This adaptability is necessary for the inclusion of all three generations. It gives its users a myriad of choice and an ever-changing experience.
This project offers a multitude of level changes and possibilities for programme. As with a traditional egg carton there is the upper (top) side and the lower (under) side which automatically allows for sun and shady areas depending on the use / user.
The ‘egg carton’ simply gets cut, folded and adapted to form openings, entrances, platforms, walkways and a multitude of activities including pools, sandpits, paved areas, coloured ball pits and the like. It is then envisaged that several of these activities will have the possibility of being viewed from the lower level as illustrated in the section.
