This is a project I made in the 8th semester during the fourth year of my education. The main idea of the project is to create an open space, where students can continue their day after they are finished with classes. It is also orientated to the whole neighborhood. The school is situated in the busy city centre of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria (between big transport communications and a park) which makes the location just right for a high school. The site location is easy accessible from the stops of the public transport, placed nearby. However, the noise from the street traffic might be too distracting for that kind of a building. Thus, a big wall is designed to be used as a buffer between the noisy boulevard and the quiet learning atmosphere inside. In the model the east elevation represents this solid wall, which is almost without any perforations except for a big hole in the shape of an enormous door. This has a metaphorical meaning, as it is said that every language is a new window to the world. This door in the wall is the door that every student should cross as to enter the world of the languages. In the south part of the site location there is a green park so the school’s backyard is opened in this direction. The design idea is to have a school on the limit between the busy city and the quiet park where there are friendly atmosphere and enough space for after class activities suitable for the student to spend all of their spare time there. The building is organized in four blocks, according to the main usage purpose. The different classrooms are situated in three identical blocks, where every block is for one specialization. The fourth volume is the place, where after class activities happen - there are organized a big library with lots of space for individual work and an auditorium with a scene. The entering atrium and the auditorium are designed to form a common public space where all the school life will happen. In the atrium, on the fourth level, there are pedestrian bridges which are connecting the learning blocks with the library. In the fourth level there are no classrooms. The space is designed as a meeting point for all the students. It separates the blocks in two equal vertical parts. The level gives the chance to the students from the different blocks to meet, to chat or just to relax. It serves as a connection between the different class and after class activities. The facades are designed with energy efficiency materials. The first level and the roof of the sports hall have a green façade. The three main blocks are with ventilated panel façade system. The fourth block and the wall (the east elevation) are designed with façade system using natural stone. The big atrium is closed by a curtain wall which has a supporting construction of glass and steel ropes.
