Laneway Apartment
Completed: 2020

A timber wall runs the length of this modest 1960s two bedroom apartment finishing at the balcony window overlooking a leafy laneway.
An inefficient corridor used to access the two bedrooms has been removed to allow space for a large bathroom. Previously obscured sunlight enters the open living area through reconfigured bedroom doors. The central wall acts as a screen to provide shelter and partition between private and public spaces. Matching timber doors with oversized handles are designed to conceal doors to create a uniform and natural backdrop for living. An original hardwood mantlepiece with mosaic floor tiles survives to complement the soft modern finishes.
The spatial experience of the single long room and wall of timber at the heart of this home changes with each passing hour of the day.
