The new regional gallery Zeit.Kunst.Niederösterreich in the Dominican church of Krems injects contemporary art into a historic site. The objective was to build a future platform for the transregional presentation of contemporary Lower Austrian artists, a clear statement of the high standards aimed at in the gallery concept. Under the artistic direction of Alexandra Schantl, a total of 1,600 square meters of exhibition space divided between two locations opens up exceptional curatorial possibilities. While the Shedhalle in St. Pölten was adapted by BWM Architects, the large-scale reconstruction of the nave of the Krems Dominican church, comprising approximately 1,100 m², is based on a collaboration by Lukas Göbl, Fritz Göbl, and Franz Gschwantner. The task of adapting the church into a presentation space with a sacred atmosphere called for the extensive renovation and adaptation of the existing structure. A redesign of the forecourt is also being planned as part of the reconstruction work. The new foyer is considerate of the sacred building, a pivotal point of the structure’s transformation. A transparent pavilion has been set inside the main entrance. This glass house will function as an entrance lobby with a ticket booth and shop, and also to distribute the flow of visitors to and from the exhibition space and the Krems municipal wine museum. The design makes use of glass throughout, for all components: walls, ceilings, beams, columns, doors, light bars, furniture, stairs, ramps, railings. Only the dimensions and surface characteristics differ according to the type and size of the component. The forcing of this material generates a transparent cube, which immediately evokes an association with crystals. This visual impression is further supported by the fact that the pavilion is completely freestanding. An autonomous element in the room, the pavilion only touches the existing structure at the most necessary points. The church square behind the gallery will also be renovated and redesigned. A fence of dense rows of steel swords is reminiscent of waving grass, both in silhouette and placement. This makes it possible to separate public and private areas without the need of a built visual partition. All outside doorways have a patterned, pixel-like surface produced by laser incisions in the anthracite-colored, metallic, iron coating. The increased perforation on some areas of the main entrance is consciously placed at average eye level. Because behind this door is an additional glass door that opens independently, the pattern of holes allows one to peek into the foyer of the regional gallery.Location: Dominikanerkirche Krems, Körnermarkt 14, 3500 KremsYear: 2011-2015Client: Stadt Krems / Land NiederösterreichArea: ca. 1000 m²Design team: Lukas Göbl, Fritz Göbl, Franz Gschwantner
