The renovated Arcade-Sunshine Laundry Company processing plant offers some of the only true loft apartments in the nation’s capital. Its playful design adding metal-framed bays and balconies breathes new life into an abandoned 1950′s industrial building. Soaring ceilings, open floor plans with raised interior bedrooms, and rooftop terraces distinguish the 38 units, including top floor duplexes. Original concrete floors, exposed columns and beams, and interior brick facing are combined with modern kitchens and bathrooms, lighting and sustainable finishes. Rooftop penthouses with private terraces create a sculptural cap to the flat roof of the Art Moderne building. The 60,000 square-foot project has spurred further redevelopment in the long-neglected Petworth neighborhood.
