At Lakeland Hospital, all areas of a patient’s health are addressed – physical, mental, social and environmental. The gardens around the facility are a significant part of the hospital’s healing environment. The gardens give patients and visitors a place to focus, which helps to reduce their stress.
The planting design of the gardens creates a sense of hierarchy and flow on the campus, drawing attention to entrances and deemphasizing parking areas.
The interior design is integrated with the exterior design and reflects the Berrien County community, creating a sense of familiarity for patients and visitors. For example, water is integral to life in Berrien County - from the foundations of the St. Joseph Harbor as an important Lake Michigan port to the recreation enjoyed today.
As a result, water and nautical elements are reflected throughout the campus. A liquid path is a key conceptual design element that brings the river to the patients and staff. The forms and materials assist in wayfinding and relax patients and family as they move through the facility.
