Hidden deep within the woods of Truckee, California, this Donald Judd-inspired home stands strong amongst the pines. Walls made of cement blocks and angled steel roof lines create an impressive exterior. In collaboration with Faulkner Architects, NICOLEHOLLIS designed a home with natural materials that are beautiful and bold. The home’s unique floor plan consists of long hallways and large rooms surrounding the home’s focal point, a central courtyard. X foot tall glass windows and sliding doors open to the courtyard to create an unparalleled indoor-outdoor entertaining atmosphere.
The charred wood front door is the gateway to the kitchen, which is filled with similar materials and tones. The blackened steel hood and Cambrian black granite backsplash are statement-making as they tower over the kitchen and mirror the same strong angles of the surrounding architecture.
Steps away from the kitchen island is a Donald Judd-inspired table with built-in benches fabricated by Julian Giuntoli Custom Furniture. Just beyond the dining table is the perfect place to enjoy snow-filled winter days. A freestanding wood fireplace by Cornish Masonry Stove Company warms the living room and creates a cozy atmosphere within the concrete walls. A custom console in solid bleached ambrosia maple and saddle leather conceals a motor operated television.
The bedrooms feature accent walls made of Raw Sugar Pine to portray a modern cabin feel. The low-profile, wood plank bedframe by E15 and the patinated aluminum green bedside tables by Donald Judd are smooth and sleek, and the children’s room houses two sets of built-in Raw Sugar Pine bunkbeds with encased drawers and shelves.
This custom-built home perfectly reflects the adventurous, close-knit family who visits this mountain escape as frequently as they can. The stunning grounds and endless activities bring the family to Truckee, but it’s this home that makes it hard to leave.
