As a challenge, this house, located on a steep slope in the Colombian mountains, takes full advantage of the topography to implement a strategy that incorporates ecological factors and bioclimatic principles. It features a water reservoir that serves as both an ecological corridor and the central element from which the design evolves. The approach to this laguna is projected on the flattest part of the plot, optimizing its natural depth and shape to collect rainwater and direct its flow.
The lot’s morphology allowed for the creation of a proposal centered around a reservoir, which fosters a microclimate and establishes a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature. This design reduces the building's footprint, minimizing its impact on the land. Once the reservoir's depth and shape were determined, based on the most suitable topographical elevation near the house, the structure was raised above the water level, enabling the natural runoff to be directed around the building.
The water circulation is facilitated by two waterfalls, which help oxygenate the reservoir, maintain its level, and encourage regular water flow. The steep slope also plays a role in driving the water away from the house, providing both a landscape solution and an architectural feature. This design was inspired by the laguna as the central element of the site.
In planning the house, we sought to minimize excavation by adapting to the land’s different levels, avoiding the need for multiple stories. This approach ensures the building does not visually dominate the natural environment. The L-shaped layout frames the reservoir geometrically, with three staggered levels that integrate with the land’s morphology through horizontal planes in the subfloor and deck.
The use of eaves and pergolas effectively controls sunlight and crosswinds, enhancing interior comfort during the hottest days. These elements, along with exterior terraces, provide spaces for relaxation and contemplation, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors. From every angle, the design frames views of the stunning Colombian tropical landscape.
