Laguna Coast Resort, Naxos
A new hotel experience
The Laguna Coast Foundation, a multifaceted organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the landscape in the Laguna region of Naxos, commissioned the study, architectural design, and building permit process for the Laguna Coast Resort—a five-star hotel complex. The project comprises 21 luxury suites with a total capacity of 73 beds, thoughtfully integrated into the natural surroundings. The design and permitting phase began in early 2023 and was completed by September of the same year. Construction commenced in October 2023 and was impressively completed within just 18 months, by April 2025. Project management and coordination were overseen directly by the Laguna Coast Foundation, ensuring close alignment with its values and goals. The majority of construction work was carried out by local crews and contractors, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to supporting the island’s economy and craftsmanship. The total project budget amounted to €4,700,000.
The architectural vision was centered on creating a dialogue between built space and natural setting, with a particular focus on the nearby lagoon. Two shallow, organically shaped water elements punctuate key areas of the resort—adjacent to the restaurant, and at the heart of the complex. These features serve not only as contemplative resting points but also enhance the microclimate by offering passive cooling and gentle humidity. The water used is desalinated seawater, underscoring the project’s commitment to sustainable resource management in the Cyclades.
The surrounding landscape was designed to host functional yet low-impact outdoor amenities, including an open-air gym and a wood-fired oven area. Paving materials—ranging from stone and wood to colored pebble-finished concrete—were chosen in earthy tones and laid in harmony with the site’s natural topography, minimizing intervention.
Circulation within the resort unfolds through organically shaped paths that follow the contours of the natural landscape. Linear walkways gently traverse the water features, while more secluded trails lead to tranquil, private areas. The entire layout is step-free, offering seamless and inclusive access throughout the property.
Suite entrances are positioned on the rear façade, opening into private courtyards framed by perforated klostra walls—traditional clay partitions that filter light and offer visual privacy. The suites are divided into two typologies: those with sea views and private pools, and internal ones featuring terraces that appear to float above the central water feature—each enhancing tranquility and a sensory connection to the environment.
The interior design embodies a philosophy of understated luxury, fusing contemporary elegance with relaxed island living. Custom-designed furniture tailored to each room's proportions, combined with materials such as oak wood, locally sourced marble, and surfaces in muted natural tones, create a warm, refined atmosphere. Unobstructed sightlines between the living area, bedroom, and bathroom promote a sense of openness and spatial harmony throughout.
Laguna Coast Resort has already garnered attention as one of the most anticipated hotel projects of the year. It has been included in Forbes’ 2025 Bucket List and is a proud member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH).
