The Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center is a new 3,300-square-foot facility located in Lafayette-Pointer Park in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, DC that replaced an existing building. It is used by the Chevy Chase community and adjacent Lafayette Elementary School. The new structure includes a multipurpose room with the option to subdivide the space for flexible programming, a classroom, a kitchenette, an office, public restroom facilities accessible from the building exterior, service spaces, outdoor terraces, and integrated stormwater management landscaping. An improved stormwater management design for the adjacent park/hill area, as well as site lighting, were included within the project scope.
There were several challenges overcome in the Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center project. One significant challenge was how to aesthetically fit the new facility into its environment. It is located in a park within an established residential neighborhood, so it needed to feel part of both visually. To that end, we analyzed the heights of the surrounding homes and designed the recreation center to have a similar height. The building’s stone façade both fits into the style of the neighborhood and connects to the natural setting of the park. Vines acting as screens for the building further add to the sense that it is part of the park. The fact that the building is approachable from all four sides and has entrances on three sides meant that we had to pay extra attention to detail to hide any potential eyesores.
The site added challenges to the project. Existing cherry trees are highly valued by the neighborhood and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, so the building siting, orientation, and footprint had to be configured to prevent damage to the trees. The site also presented significant stormwater management challenges that were addressed via close consultation with the civil engineer and landscape architect. Solutions included integrating stormwater management facilities with the landscaping to create a landscape that is both beautiful and functional and including a green roof.
