Designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lafayette Park is an urban redevelopment project in Detroit, Michigan. To honor one of the community’s first residents who served for many years helping to preserve this masterwork of modern architecture, the board of directors voted to commission a memorial. This public art piece that reflects (literally) the best qualities of Lafayette Park and the city. Based on a quote from Mies, the stainless steel cinder block forms suggest the hard-working utilitarian ethos of Detroit, while the highly polished surface mirrors the architecture and landscape surrounding it.
