The architectural and urban conception of the project was led with three main objectives: valorise the preserved historic hospital, constitute facades on the streets of Sèvres and Vaneau which would assure an architectural continuity of their morphology and their character and reconstitute a vast garden in the place of the former hospital kitchen garden. VALORISE THE HISTORIC HOSPITAL
To attain this objective, the implantation of the new buildings facing the historic hospital, follows the axis of the existing construction. This device creates a vast, well aligned square in the centre of which is the historic hospital. The new constructions constitute a vast frame which valorises vocation the historic monument. The architecture of the facades of these new buildings was conceived according to a simple and regular organization. A cornice marks the upper level of the third floor facade, along all the facades facing the hospital. These architectural devices reinforce the concept of the frame. Finally, on the main axis of the hospital, a wide gap in the new buildings creates a new opening on the rue Vaneau which reinscribes the historic building in its neighbourhood. CONSTITUTE FACADES ON THE STREETSTo constitute facades which integrate into the continuity of existing facades on streets adjacent to the project, the architecture of was differentiated, stairwell by stairwell, to pick up on the dimensional characteristics of the existing constructions plot by plot. The facade of every building is composed with its base, its main body and its attic; the unity of the composition being assured by the use of thick stone facing for the totality of facades. In each of the two streets, the frontages were designed to harmonize with the existing buildings. Thus, in their morphology as in their character, the street frontages ensure continuity with the existing environment. Finally note the valorisation of the elements of the historical inheritance which constitutes the Egyptian fountain known as of Fellah and the entry of subway of the street of Sevres. A set back of the frontage, corresponding with the property limit of the RATP, as well as an absence of large openings, constitutes a backdrop suitable for these remarkable architectural objects. RECONSTITUTE A VAST GARDEN The project is characterized by the reconstruction of a large garden situated in front of the hospital church and in continuity with the nearby gardens. The architecture of the buildings which open on to this garden are composed and axed to constitute "garden" facades "and to harmonize with the plan of paths and planting. The garden which corresponds to the former oblong hospital kitchen garden is clearly bounded by the path following the hospitable buildings the party wall and the facades of the new buildings which establish the short sides of the rectangle.
