Repeat client Ladurée enlisted Spacesmith as executive architect for the Parisian patisserie’s new Rockefeller Center location, a 600 sf storefront at one of New York City’s busiest tourist destinations. Delivered on a fast-paced six-month schedule, our team worked in close collaboration with Paris-based design architect Studio Ravn to coordinate a seamless process from concept to completion.
A landmarked building within Rockefeller Center’s Channel Gardens, the space was converted from a small retail shop to a café with meticulous attention to detail. Spacesmith surveyed existing conditions, reviewed shop drawings and submittals and monitored construction to ensure the design met brand standards. Spacesmith was also tasked with designing the back-of-house.
In the front-of-house area, the focal point is a convex millwork installation with three curvilinear openings. Brass details follow the arch of each nook, concealing LED lighting that casts a warm glow on the wallpaper. The countertops just below hold appliances on top while covering refrigerated storage underneath. A large display case for pastries separates the staff from customers. On the opposite wall, arched niches offer more display shelving and counter space for patrons.
The compact yet efficient back-of-house area is fitted with a countertop and sink, stock shelves, and cold storage. An existing platform complicated the equipment layout, which Spacesmith resolved by extending the space to neatly fit all refrigerators.
Elevated finishes help tell the story of Ladurée: brushed brass accents, plaster ceiling coffers in the brand’s signature green, and glossy floor tiles of checkered black and white. Certain elements were incorporated to feature custom Brunschwig & Fils wallcoverings, created in partnership with Ladurée specifically for this store’s location. Inside the store, mirrored walls and recessed shelving create the illusion of more space, making the store’s interior feels airy despite its maximalist palette.
