Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled (LADD) is a non-profit that provides a variety of programs and services for people of all ages with disabilities. The community-based services are unique in the way they teach independent living skills in a home-like environment that will help people become self-sufficient, less dependent on others, and healthy in mind and body.
With rejuvenation, campus growth, and expanded services in mind, LADD selected emersion DESIGN, Human Nature, CMTA Consulting Engineers and HGC Construction to provide master planning, architecture, engineering, landscape design, civil engineering, sustainable consulting, interior design, structural engineering, and construction services for the LADD Campus renovation.
The goal of this building addition phase was for the 3601 building to accommodate new office areas for LADD employees, including a state-of-the art training and education center, a new two-level entry addition, spacious deck, catering kitchen to host events and increase LADD’s revenue stream, and adjacent site work facing the courtyard.
Inspired by LADD’s motto “different just like you,” the team bounced every design idea off of their motto. Everything from the ceiling grid to the material choices were inspired by this motto. For example, the variegated color of the metal siding is dependent on the viewer’s perspective. Similarly, the floor plan is at an unexpected angle and only perceivable once you enter the building. This subtle shift in the geometry not only reminds users that subtle differences can change one’s outlook, but also the important of celebrating and embracing these differences, for they make everyone’s life richer.
