Following a facilities assessment of its existing Learning Resource Center, Harbor College decided to replace the existing structure to accommodate new educational programs. DLR Group's design consolidates a library and learning resource center into a single facility, which provides students with comprehensive research and tutoring services under one roof. The new Library & Learning Resource Center is an inspirational environment that engages students while providing staff with a functional and efficient workplace. The building integrates with other new campus facilities to further define a prominent campus mall. The use of unique construction materials positions it as a landmark, sustainable building that actuates the central quad to enhance campus connectivity. The expansive glass facade is visually inviting and welcomes users to explore and access its services. A grand double-height lobby serves as an open, linear passageway with access to library stacks, reference, and periodicals; computer labs; tutoring services; academic support services; and classroom labs.
The Harbor College Library & Learning Resource Center replaced an outdated library with a new 45,000 SF building designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification. This student focused building facilitates learning with convenient, seamless student access to research and academic support as well as self-service check-out stations, open computer labs, quick-reference research databases, 24/7 book returns, and on-line reservations for study rooms. Varying modes of study and learning are satisfied with quiet spaces for individuals, interactive group study rooms, and lounge spaces with inspiring exterior views. The building program includes general library collections, reference, periodicals, media; a computer lab; tutoring services; individual and group study spaces; and classroom labs. Photovoltaic panels on the canopy act as a means of energy collection while exterior louvers on the southern facade reduce solar heat gain. Low-flush toilets and waterless urinals promote water conservation. Abundant glazing on the north facade maximizes the introduction of natural light, while independently-activated sensors and artificial lighting zones reduce overall energy consumption.
