To diversify the spaces of the social center and welcome a broader program and audience in the cultural center, Florange provides its residents with a central venue that unites the two entities. Through the restructuring and extension of the existing buildings, the agency created a harmony hall and multifunctional spaces, doubling the capacity of the current concert hall. The building embodies a strong identity, echoing the city’s industrial heritage, and reflects a sober and resilient design approach.
To bring together the various services and activities of both centers in a single location, two compact extensions were designed by the agency. Each entity, however, retains its autonomy with dedicated access points.
Within the social center, the consolidation and simplicity of living spaces (parent-child reception areas, activity rooms, playrooms, tutoring spaces, offices, etc.) promote shared use and flexible reconfiguration. The unifying space of the cultural center is the concert hall. Raised and equipped with retractable seating, it offers doubled capacity and high stage flexibility, supporting a generalist program open to all.
To accompany the center’s renewal, the agency designed a sustainable architecture with a strong identity. The compactness of the two extensions and the buildings helps optimize envelope surfaces and insulation, rationalize project costs, and free up ground space for the park. The new volumes are primarily constructed in steel, a material valued for its recyclability and local craftsmanship. It is also highlighted on the façade through the creation of a large portico that frames the architecture at 9 meters high, emphasizing the center’s unity. The facility, and its new concert hall, becomes a strong symbol of the city’s socio-cultural vitality.
