The
complexity of the site, with irregular shape and in steep slope, and the functional
needs of the hospital, were important factors which we took advantage of in
order to obtain the necessary singularity for a public hospital in order to
build a strong sense of community.
The
building is designed to express a clean geometry, with a cross-section that is
adapted to the slope of the site, combining one and two stories of height, and
placed in the middle of the plot enabling a peripheral road around it giving access to the different health
services and segregating visitors, professional and emergency flows.
The
reduced height of the building and its green flat roof blends with the
surrounding landscape of cultivated terraces and small constructions.
The
building is organized along two parallel east-west axes, each one with a
different kind of circulation: visitors to the south, where the main access is
located, and staff to the north. Between this two axis wards with different
services stand alongside separated by a series of patios that contribute to the
climatic control of the building.
The
building is set to benefit from the exterior views towards the landscape as
well as from the interior views of the patios. The façades are cladded in
perforated metal sheets that filter the strong sunlight of the Canary Islands
and give the building a changing image, opaque and silent in daylight
and bright and lively by the night.
