Located on the ground floor of a residential building, this project transforms an elongated retail space into a dynamic family center and playroom. Situated on a pedestrian street that connects cities green areas and neighborhoods, and is conveniently close to a metro station, the space is strategically positioned to become a community hub for social interaction, education, and leisure.
The design concept revolves around creating a multifunctional environment that seamlessly integrates activities for both adults and children. The main idea is to foster a space where families can engage in leisure activities, educational programs, and cooperative food preparation, making it a neighborhood focal point for interaction and learning.
One of the key design elements to structure the space is a vibrant, colorful curved wall that defines the more private areas of the program while providing a lively backdrop for the open space programs. The geometry of this wall was informed by the existing conditions and helps to maintain and renew the original stairs to the second floor. This element also serves as an acoustical buffer between the open and noisier spaces and the enclosed and quieter areas. The continuous ceiling treatment in the open areas will ensure that the apartments above are protected from unpleasant sounds.
The ground floor hosts a variety of spaces designed for communal and individual activities. A versatile double space classroom accommodates various educational programs and class sizes, while a cooperative pantry allows members to prepare all kind of celebratory foods as well as basic snacks, breakfasts, and afternoon treats. Adjacent to the pantry, a communal dining area provides a space for enjoying these meals together. The playing area is an open space where children can engage in various activities, and the art laboratory offers a creative environment for art and craft projects. Public restrooms are conveniently located near the pantry to serve all users.
The mezzanine or upper floor features quieter, more focused spaces. A lecture corner offers a serene area for adult education and lectures, visually connected with the classroom below. Above the dining area, an interactive play space known as the sensorial net provides children with a unique place to explore, serving as a suspended playground. The discover room encourages learning through play, and a small kids' theater, complete with costumes, inspires imaginative play and performances.
Envisioned as a neighborhood hub, this family center encourages community members to come together, participate in educational programs, and enjoy leisure activities. The cooperative pantry fosters communal cooking and sharing, enhancing the sense of community. By intersecting adult and children’s activities in a cohesive design, the space promotes interaction, learning, and play, making it a valuable addition to the community’s social infrastructure.
