The Kyabram District Hospital is the key health facility servicing the town of Kyabram and surrounding areas in the Goulburn River Area. In addition to providing a broad suite of health services, it is a building of considerable civic importance.
The renewal of a key section of the hospital provided an exciting platform to create a building that supports the delivery of efficient, cutting edge health care and a positive experience for staff, patients and visitors.
The goal was to expand the hospital’s primary and ambulatory health services and to improve service integration. We reacted with a simple diagrammatic response: a square and a line. The inside of the square became a large courtyard where people gather. The outside provides a desperately needed connection between existing buildings.
Internally the design incorporates a series of nodes each coded with coloured brickwork, skylights and way-finding lines to guide the user to the relevant functional area. Externally, a front elevation supports the strong civic identity of the hospital, with a single line consolidating gesture in the form of the word KYABRAM that is both functional, and makes a contribution to the collective landscape of the town.
