Tucked away in a remote mountain side off the Digana golf club road is Kurundu house ,a small 4 bedroom retreat for a banker and his family. The site is a 132 perch bare plot except for a lonely Kohomba tree.
There is no visible habitation in its immediate environs and one is immediately aware of the openness and loneliness. To add further drama it overlooks a branch of the Victoria reservoir which fills up during the rainy season and in the far distance is the Hunnsagiriya mountains.
With a stage like this, it was all about capturing the explosive openness of this place while focusing on the distance views beyond, where one can relax and rejuvenate.
The approach from the main road is a rough track winding through small village huts, vegetable gardens and large Mara trees and finally up a steep rocky lane that lands at the site.
This is when one is confronted for the first time with the stupendous view.
The land has a small level platform and falls away sharply to the water.
We used the level difference to bury half the structure, so it presents a nonchalant single story façade to the road.
The entire front façade is clad in cinnamon sticks and blocks the view initially.
A small ‘v’ shaped side entrance gives access. The design was conceived as two staggered 2 storey rectangles with a common double height center. The upper floor of the 2 wings occupies bed rooms while the lower floors occupy living, dining and kitchen facilities.
Upon entering one encounters the magnificent view framed within the double height verandah. Heightened by the addition of a infinity edge swimming pool.
As one proceeds further down more and more of the 180° view is revealed.
The material palette of random rubble floors, exposed painted brick walls and cinnamon stick screens adds to the simplicity.
