Nestled within the mountainous landscape of Nosara, Costa Rica, KUL Nosara is a residential development composed of two contemporary tropical beach houses that carefully respond to the site's steep topography and extraordinary natural surroundings. Rather than treating the terrain as an obstacle, the project embraces the existing hillside, allowing the architecture to become an extension of the landscape.
The site strategy organizes the development into two independent residences positioned at different elevations, maximizing privacy, natural ventilation, solar orientation, and panoramic views while minimizing intervention on the land. This vertical arrangement allows each home to establish its own relationship with the surrounding forest and distant horizon without compromising the experience of the other.
Located at the highest point of the property, MIA House occupies the upper platform of the site. Conceived as a calm and linear composition, the residence follows the natural contours of the terrain, framing long views toward the tropical landscape. Its architecture prioritizes openness, natural light, and a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, creating a serene retreat immersed in nature.
Below, TURI House is carefully embedded into the lower portion of the hillside, where the architecture responds more directly to the site's geometry and vegetation. The residence unfolds through generous social spaces that extend toward expansive terraces and a sculptural swimming pool, reinforcing the connection between architecture, water, and the surrounding tropical environment. Its design emphasizes fluid circulation, outdoor living, and a strong dialogue with the landscape.
Although each residence possesses its own architectural identity, both share a common material language based on exposed concrete, natural stone, timber, and large glazed surfaces. This restrained palette reinforces the project's contemporary tropical character while establishing a timeless relationship between architecture and nature.
More than a collection of two houses, KUL Nosara explores how multiple residences can coexist within a challenging mountainous site through careful placement, environmental sensitivity, and a shared architectural vision that celebrates the landscape rather than transforming it.
