As Kuee Architecture neared its ten-year milestone, Principal Architect Ar. Shyuan Kuee sought a transformation—not just for the business but for the space that housed its creative energy. Her vision for the office was ambitious: a contemporary, comfortable workspace that also embraced sustainability at its core. The challenge? Incorporating recycled materials while maintaining a sophisticated and polished aesthetic.
With a strong commitment to sustainability, Ar. Shyuan embarked on a journey to repurpose materials that would otherwise go to waste. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, she collected a myriad of discarded items from friends, recycling organizations, and her own surroundings. The results are nothing short of stunning.
One of the most striking features of the new office is the terrazzo flooring, which integrates over 1,000 shattered wine glass bottles. The glass, meticulously collected and broken, was mixed with terrazzo and polished to create a floor that gleams with unexpected elegance. This symbolic piece of design not only highlights the creative potential of recycled materials but also reflects the sustainable ethos that lies at the heart of this renovation.
On a unique feature wall, Ar. Shyuan clad the surface with hundreds of 1-cent coins, collected through the generous efforts of non-profit organizations and friends. These unused coins, once considered insignificant, now form a striking statement piece, symbolizing the collective power of community and sustainability.
In another nod to the environment, Ar. Shyuan turned to the abundant natural resources of Ipoh, sourcing marble from a local quarry. This marble, combined with a salvaged wood log, was transformed into a spectacular reception table. The pairing of these raw materials embodies a harmony between nature and design, grounding the space in both luxury and environmental consciousness.
Ar. Shyuan also brought a personal touch into the office, converting her daughter’s abstract painting into a custom carpet for the meeting room. The design, inspired by the hills and lake of Gua Air, adds a sense of calm and creativity, blending art with practicality. This unique feature gives the space a deeply personal connection, fostering an environment where creativity can thrive.
The renovation’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond aesthetics. To meet GreenRE certification, the office is equipped with energy-saving devices and insulated with rockwool above the ceiling boards, ensuring efficient energy use and maintaining a comfortable climate. All paints and adhesives used are low in volatile organic compounds (VOC), further underscoring the focus on creating a healthy workspace for the team.
Ar. Shyuan Kuee’s office renovation is a testament to the power of sustainable design—where recycled materials are not just reused, but celebrated and elevated into functional art. The space stands as an inspiring example of how sustainability and sophistication can go hand in hand, shaping a modern workplace that is beautiful, responsible, and future-ready.
