A green sanctuary for Malaysia’s airport rejuvenation
RIMBA is a 970-square-metre garden sanctuary experience within Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 Satellite Centre Court. The project has rejuvenated an existing area, turning it into a calm respite that enhances the passenger journey within the terminal.
As part of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad’s (MAHB) ongoing transformation of one of the nation’s most iconic gateways, RIMBA helps to further realise the client’s philosophy of “Airport in the Forest, Forest in the Airport.” Lead8 served as the Design Consultant for the project in collaboration with GDP Architects as the Executive Architect, alongside landscape designer Landart.
A living tribute to Malaysia’s rainforest
Conceived as a living tribute to Malaysia’s tropical rainforest heritage, RIMBA reimagines KLIA’s central forest court as an immersive, multi-sensory experience that welcomes travellers with the spirit, richness, and tranquillity of nature. The rejuvenated design enhances both the capacity and ambience of the Satellite Centre Court, positioning it as a contemporary showcase of Malaysia’s ecological and cultural identity.
The centerpiece, a newly unveiled LED screen portal, acts as a digital gateway blending motion, light, and nature-inspired storytelling, inviting visitors into a rainforest environment that captures Malaysia’s biodiversity and hospitality.
Enhancing the passenger experience
Within, preserved mature trees planted nearly three decades ago are complemented by indigenous plant species, sculptural art installations by local artist Nizam Sculpture, and an elevated timber mezzanine walkway featuring curated works by Malaysian artists.
The revitalised space integrates new functional enhancements including a relocated information desk, improved transfer counters, and digitally curated storytelling zones introducing travellers to the history and significance of Malaysia’s rainforests.
Instagram-worthy spaces inspired by national icons such as the Hibiscus, Hornbill, Rafflesia, and Bunga Kantan celebrate local flora and fauna through artistic expression and architectural detailing.
Continuing innovation in aviation design
RIMBA and the ongoing enhancements at KLIA Terminal 1 strengthen Lead8’s growing aviation and transport design portfolio across Asia, which already includes the Boarding Gate Enhancement works at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) Terminal, the Commercial Landside Terminal at Beijing Daxing International Airport, and other terminal upgrade initiatives aimed at redefining global airport experiences.
