How does a city block completed in 1940 for office and warehouse use accommodate the needs of 2020's residents of housing and aparthotel?
The answer is a thorough renovation that lasted more than five years, but now the former Kesko headquarters is open again! 30.000 sqm host 185 new homes and a hotel.
Among the very many challenges, a crucial one was the building's façade: protected by the cityscape authority but in so poor condition that it had to be completely demolished. We developed together with Wienerberger brick factory a whole new brick that would match the appearance of the demolished bricks with the most varied colors and burn marks.
A change of purpose requires creativity and perseverance. New functions had to be fit on old existing structures, including all new HVAC and sewage for nearly five hundred bathrooms. It was like building a ship in a bottle!
