This design successfully considers its Owners and how a 12,000 square foot house responds to changing needs over time. A design that speaks quietly from the street, the house accommodates a very robust program within a lithe, modernist aesthetic that maximizes view, daylight, breezes and direct connection.
An indoor sports court affords both the primary design problem and solution. Based on strict HOA requirements and a sloping site, submersion of the gym became an interesting and cohesive direction that anchors the design. The result is a house that rather disappears from the street and elegantly conceals overall scale.
Excavation for the gym made concrete a natural material selection. By extension, the concrete “face” of the gym serves as datum for all service spaces and infrastructure. The resultant floor plan allows all primary rooms direct connection to the Texas Hill Country.
Subsequent material choices are further derived from this unique solution. Mahogany and stucco were selected to balance and contrast concrete elements. The mahogany elicits warmth from the concrete. Clean stucco masses hover in repose over the submerged gym and the pool below contrast the landscaping while honoring the modernist spirit of the house.
