The purpose of this project was to build a factory for pork processing and packing, a restaurant, and an office for a social welfare agency that operates several elderly homes and this facility.
The beautiful rural landscape near Narita Airport was chosen as the site as an inspiration for the cooperation between agriculture and social welfare. The space serves not only functional purposes but also seeks to draw out vitality from the community by connecting the surrounding scenery and resources to this new facility.
Loggias attached to the main building add confidence to a building of limited size, while also guiding people from the parking lot at the back of the site and lending eaves to outdoor activities such as the vegetable market and wood chopping. A continuous ribbon of windows on the second level provides views of the surrounding cedar forest from anywhere inside. A catwalk around the perimeter allows for easy maintenance in keeping the windows clean.
