W Kitchen is the all-day dining restaurant of the W Retreat & Spa. The building architecture was designed by Eco.Id. Poole Associates specified all the furniture, fittings and lighting. Custom light rings were designed by Hasrin at Vision Design Studio, Bangkok. The kitchen layout was designed in conjunction with kitchen consultant Mr. Damayantha of Gemini Lanka, Sri Lanka.
A casual beach-side elegance prevails at W Kitchen though the use of sand tone marble flooring, flowing 10 meter high sheer draperies and specially treated timber that has a driftwood finish.
Guests are encouraged to attend barefoot, as the flooring has a special non slip treatment, textured with acid, that is very pleasant to the touch.
Cooking is fully exposed with an Electrolux island unit directly on the buffet line, so that the chefs can interact with the guests. A Beach pizza oven is located directly on the central axis for view of the fire from the entry.
Intimacy is created in the soaring 12 meter high space with the use of circular booths, draped in sheer fabric.
The open kitchen is clad with hand made ceramic tiles from Thailand, in a refreshing emerald green. Throw pillows at the perimeter bench seating picks up this color as well as the serving bowls along the buffet line.
Even the simplest of furniture is given a primitive stance. Cutlery and side service counters are constructed from 900mm diameter tree trunks with integral drawers.
