This mid-century modern home is situated high in the hills of South Pasadena with spectacular views to the west. The program included renovating the kitchen on an extremely tight budget, and upgrades to the existing structure where required. By integrating the kitchen into the living room we opened it up to the views. The design blends elements of the mid-century modern style with a more modern aesthetic by tying the chrome and white enamel of the 1950s O?Keefe & Merritt stove into stainless steel and white Caesarstone countertops, and white Ikea cabinets. The steel countertop also doubles as a bar/dining table in the tiny living room. While the design focused on functionality by modernizing the kitchen for an urban foodie client, its materials help to create a neutral palette indoors and reflect the outdoors.
