Kirigami Flame Pavilion is a lightweight temporary installation inspired by the Olympic Flame and designed for FAV 2024, Festival des Architectures Vives, an event celebrated annually in Montpellier, France.
FAV offers a route to visitors comparable with the Olympic Torch Relay, which ends with the lighting of the Olympic Flame. Fire is a powerful symbol of the Olympic movement. Not only does it represent the virtues of modern sporting competition, but it also holds a link with antiquity. Moreover, this element is in constant motion, a characteristic that fits the topic of the festival "Rythm". For these reasons, the subject "Rythm" was approached by creating an installation miming the Olympic flame. From here, the idea is to use Kirigami to fold and cut different pieces to simulate fire's movement.
The project was pre-fabricated with complex geometry pieces organized around a semi-circle, where people can enter and stand on a "podium" surrounded by the "Olympic Flame". It is composed of forty pieces of laminated waterproof cardboard painted in two colors, the outside is black and the inner pieces have yellow tones to simulate fire’s color palette.
Kirigami Flame Pavilion was pre-fabricated in Ecuador, where the firm has its headquarters. From here, the decision to use a very lightweight material that helps the author transport the entire pavilion from Ecuador to France. The pavilion has an exact weight of 23kg, the maximum weight limit for checked bags. The pavilion was folded and transported inside a single checked bag and was assembled on-site in two days.
