The classes of the KIPP DC College Preparatory High School hosts over 850 students from Washington and its construction allows each of its 12 schools contract partners to develop and serve the mission of KIPP DC more efficiently. The project site is located next to Gallaudet University and the new commercial area of Florida Union Market, near the metro station Gallaudet / NOMA. A central and accessible location is essential for KIPP DC, with over 80% of students will travel by public transport to school. The new school building is a compact and sensibly positioned on the highest point of the site. This frees up space for the new athletics stadium and sports facilities, while revealing the extent of the place. The school opens on the sports field and offers panoramic views of Washington. It is visible from Brentwood Parkway and Metro and bus stops by students who will climb the hill every day. The light tones and dense building structure involved in lifting concept. The spark facility, in winter as in summer, thus coming to modestly add to the list of notable buildings in Washington while fitting elegantly into the landscape. Material considerations and the spatial organization of the site help support innovative teaching methods KIPP and enhance stability and emerging practices of the school.
