The King’s Highway United Methodist Church in Brooklyn has a diverse and thriving congregation as well as an active youth ministry and after-school care program. The existing church sanctuary dates from 1924 and is located on a large and prominent open space/garden corner lot at East 36th street and King’s Highway.
For the campus expansion, the open space is the project’s starting point. Conceptually, a portion of the existing garden is lifted up and supported by the community-based ministries for youth and after school care. The reasoning behind creating this additional program space is to provide a safe, social environment for the growing number of youth and young adults as they continue to nurture their faith. The major element that will support the elevated garden is a gymnasium with a teen center below. The new addition will also include support spaces, such as the public lobby/entry with a new stair and ADA elevator, officies, toilet facilities, storage and mechanical spaces. This new addition will make all levels of the church campus accessible to every member, worshipper and guest by connecting the existing campus with the new addition. The elevated garden at the roof of the gymnasium may be developed into a vegetable/herb garden thus becoming the impetus for rooftop community farming.
The massing of the new wing has a continuous ribbon of glazing at the base’s perimeter, visually suggesting the gymnasium is floating above the ground plane. The massing also includes a sustained band of glazing at the perimeter, just below the roof line, that will fill the new gymnasium with natural light. This transparent band creates the illusion of the roof garden hovering above the space below.
The design of the new addition will appear to float above the garden, suggesting a delicate touch to the earth. This is an intentional counterpoint to the existing sanctuary, which has a heavy masonry support visually anchored into the ground. The new addition creates an L-shaped ensemble within the existing garden, reinforcing the campus ambience and the warmth of a community gathering space.
