King County Parks Central Maintenance Facility
Renton, WA | Civic, Industrial, Public Works
McLennan Design led the design of the King County Parks Central Maintenance Facility, creating a resilient, human-centered operations hub on a 5.7-acre site in Renton. The project replaces outdated infrastructure with five new buildings that expand offices, meeting spaces, and maintenance areas while improving circulation, safety, and staff well-being. Sustainability is central: the facility targets Net Zero Energy with 1,100 rooftop solar panels, air-to-water heat pumps, hydronic floor systems, mixed-mode ventilation, daylight harvesting, and a 50 kVA battery backup system. Stormwater is transformed into a native wetland park, supporting biodiversity and serving as an outdoor classroom. As King County’s first mass timber building pursuing the Living Building Challenge’s Energy, Beauty, and Health & Happiness Petals, the Renton Shop sets a new benchmark for equitable, durable, and regenerative municipal infrastructure.
McLennan Design partnered with HDR who was AOR.
