The orientation to the sun and the compact two-storey construction provides the optimal condition for achieving the ‘passivhaus’ standard. Mass constuction (thermal mass) as well as sun protection and night time cooling are low-tech elements that conserve energy and provide a comfortable internal climate. The arrangement of the group rooms in each case allows an external aspect to three sides.
An open thoroughfare between entrance area, garden and kitchen encourages communication and socialisation and creates a place for communal activities and parties. As an important factor for identification and shelter each child receives their own bed. This is managed in a space-saving form by arranging them as stacked bunk beds.
The connection to the outside space is established by terraces along the south facade.
