Kiga Kindergarden is located in an area surrounded by the verdant nature of the Kiga mountains and large camphor trees of an adjoining shrine. The site exists in obscurity in a crowded area with aged small stores and residences. The site is a plane surface with an irregular shape, and has a characteristic difference in level that is equal to one floor of a building. Although the former kindergarten building had been standing for 45 years in such an environment, it was decided to rebuild it because of deterioration.
In the beginning of planning, the childcare rooms and a playroom were arranged in separate buildings, utilizing a level difference, and they were connected with an outdoor roofed passage, so that children can feel the surrounding nature with spaciousness in the site. As a result, the playground was made in the center of the site between two buildings. It serves as unfilled space, creating a sense of space and making us conscious of the surrounding nature.
Spaciousness was brought inside the building with the concept of an “alley passage" which connects childcare rooms, a playroom, toilets, a staff room, a playground, etc. Although it is very common that the playground spreads out directly in front of the classrooms, it was difficult to realize it with this site. Instead, a passage was used to connect them.
Although one side of a passage faces a classroom and the other side faces the outside, a rare form of "the middle passage" has been created as a result of arranging the rooms in consideration of the traffic line. The concept of "alley passage" has been created with the expectation that the passage would give new possibilities to the childcare areas if it becomes a rich space to stay for children.
A alley is sandwiched by buildings. Although it is exterior space, a feeling of closing is born by being inserted into the walls of buildings at a near distance. This sense sometimes generates a feeling of wrongness such as difficulty of entering. Although at the same time, it can also give us the sense of being wrapped and tranquility, feeling as though we are both inside and outside.
That is the reason why we elaborated the shape of the passage, choices of finish materials, and the sizes and arrangement of windows installed in the walls, so that the passage can give the sense of closing and spaciousness at the same time. The passage has been made to be as comfortable as the rooms, not only connecting the rooms but also becoming the extended playground and creating a sense of closeness to the surrounding greens of nature.
