Khumbila
Nepalese and Tibetan restaurant, Shibuya, Tokyo
"The boundary between the cosmos and living organisms"
A restaurant created in order to pass on the culture and customs of Nepal and Tibet. Woodcarving ornamentation ordered and produced in Nepal are set both in the exteriors and interiors, which consist of a bare concrete building frame and a glass atrium. The architect developed the design while staying in Nepal. The gently curving glass staircase accentuates the skip floor structure. Informed by the diagonals that the Japanese setback regulations impose, the crumbling roof of the glass atrium on the top floor presents a highly sensuous form. It exists as a boundary between the cosmos and architecture, and it succeeds to nullify the meaning of exterior and interior.
