Context
The project is located in a suburban residential area characterized by detached houses with diverse architectural styles, roof geometries, and massing compositions.
The site is an approximately 1,350 m² sloping plot, oriented along a northeast–southwest axis perpendicular to the street, with noticeable level differences. The side boundaries run parallel along the eastern and western edges.
Client Brief
The client’s intention was to create a modern, elegant residence that maximizes the site’s topographical advantages and panoramic views.
The program includes a spacious open-plan living–kitchen–dining area, three bedrooms, a study/library, as well as supporting functions such as wardrobe, utility, and storage spaces. Additional requirements included multiple terraces with direct garden connections, a four-car garage, and an indoor swimming pool.
Design Approach
The design builds on the extension potential provided by the existing side and rear yard conditions, allowing both lateral and longitudinal expansion.
A new lateral wing is introduced along the street-facing side, replacing the existing driveway. This intervention accommodates basement-level storage and a wellness area including a fitness room and sauna, while the garage volume above integrates these functions at street level.
The indoor swimming pool is positioned partially below ground, embedded into the natural slope of the terrain. It connects to a sunken, atrium-like outdoor terrace through large retractable glass surfaces, enabling a fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces.
Above the pool, the structure forms an accessible outdoor terrace, while the surrounding landscape is reshaped to partially conceal the built volume within the garden. Integrated concrete planters provide shading and preserve the green character of the site, while also defining covered outdoor living areas.
The intervention is conceived as a continuous spatial sequence, where architecture, landscape and structure are treated as a single system.
Spatial Organization
At street level, the extension enables a reconfiguration of the ground floor, resulting in a more clearly structured and spatially connected living environment. The main living areas are directly linked to the garden through terraces, while an internal staircase establishes a visual and physical connection to the pool level below.
On the upper floor, partial demolition combined with the new structural additions allows for a coherent residential layout with three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The garden-facing rooms extend towards covered terraces, reinforcing the relationship between interior spaces and the landscape.
An additional roof terrace is introduced, providing elevated outdoor space with extended views over the site.
Structure
The extension is conceived as a monolithic reinforced concrete structure, both vertically and horizontally articulated. By removing the existing roof and introducing a new slab structure, the addition operates as an independent volume, connected to the original building only at defined expansion joints.
