Intended to be a flagship facility for the redevelopment of the Kenyatta University Ruiru Campus outside Nairobi, the new College of Architecture Building offers views of Mount Kenya and Thika Highway from its high-profile location. DLR Group's design concept combines the rifts and valleys of the Kenyan landscape and natural forms to create unique spaces for collaboration and integration for five new programs: Architecture and Interior Design; Construction and Real Estate Management; Spatial Environmental Planning Management; Landscape Architecture and Urban Design; Geodesy Survey and Land Administration. The cafe/ramp/terracing component of the approach provides a dynamic setting for students, faculty, and staff to socialize, learn, and rest in a comfortable, shaded space. The dynamic roof form hovers and enfolds over the top of the building creating an opportunity for renewable energy resources like photovoltaic panels and rainwater storage. The vertical collaboration spaces and open studios connected by transparent stairwells infuse the building with visual and audial energy and promote communication.
The scope of this project is the design of a new 8,925 square meter academic building featuring collaborative studios, office, lecture, and common spaces. The climate in Nairobi allowed for several sustainable opportunities including natural ventilation, rainwater storage, and opportunities to harness solar energy with photovoltaic panels. DLR Group provided master planning, sustainable consulting, and architecture services for this project.
