This residential garden in the Kenwood neighborhood in Minneapolis draws inspiration from Minnesota’s diverse native landscapes, layered geology and the experience of viewing and occupying landscape through a series of thresholds and rooms. The client’s sensibility and interests demanded a sculptural and balanced combination of wild respite, material richness and modern simplicity. The project includes a new porch and second-floor deck wrapped in modern vertical metal slats that selectively frame and conceal views from the inside out. The landscape design emerged from a series of abstract collages that studied how a wild landscape is structured through a variety of architectural frames and screens and how the landscape could extend the experience of moving through a series of distinct rooms from domestic to wild. The collages also tested ideas of mass and void within the garden, situating wood plinths alongside granite-framed voids. The garden includes a sunken quarry, a fire pit, an aspen grove, prairie and woodland gardens, a floating deck, custom furniture and a grill island.
