An expressive kindergarten in a pre-determined shape, focusing on internal communication and daylighting.
When the planning description for a new kindergarten in Trondheim was made, it called for the new building to have a brick facade and a tiled, hipped roof, in order for it to conform to its neighbouring buildings from the 1970’s.
Four regular kindergarten groups in the ground floor as well as a nature kindergarten group in the basement floor make up the general organisation. Compared to our previous kindergarten projects, this one focuses more on connecting these groups internally.
Using internal windows and line of sight both to help the staff having an overview and piquing the children’s interest in their surroundings have been important considerations in the design process. The brick walls are interrupted several places to create entrances and receive daylight. The window openings are varied in shape and size, ranging from entire glass walls to small openings in solid walls.
Towards the south, the building is given a freer expression with a combination of sheltered entrances, stroller sheds and the entrance facade for the nature kindergarten group. Here, wooden constructions are given faceted shapes, in part using transparent roofs.
