An oasis within the city
Katari Plaza is a beer bar designed for one of Ecuador’s most recognized brewing companies, located in the city of Quito. The brand, already established with a strong visual identity and distinctive symbols, required a space capable of reinterpreting these elements and transforming them into an architectural expression. A principle that guided the entire design process.
Located within a commercial plaza characterized by multiple blind façades and limited outdoor space, the main challenge was to create a place that offered different faces and experiences. The spatial strategy allows the project to reveal diverse scenarios depending on the visitor’s viewpoint, inviting continuous exploration and discovery.
The concept draws inspiration from the idea of an oasis: a refuge where vegetation and a cool atmosphere harmoniously integrate with the urban environment. This was achieved through the incorporation of greenery both inside and outside, with planters, hanging plants, and green areas that balance the built and the natural.
As a tribute to beer, the dispensers were placed at the heart of the project. Instead of being hidden, they were conceived as sculptural central elements integrated into service islands that structure the space and organize user interaction.
A distinctive interior feature is the continuous wooden membrane designed using parametric tools. This dynamic skin flows across vertical and horizontal planes, articulating circulation and transitions between lounge and service areas. Its repetition generates texture, rhythm, and visual coherence, while integrated lighting brings the space to life through shifting atmospheres.
The lighting concept draws inspiration from the Andean legend of Katari, a mythical being said to have been born on a starry night as the child of the moon. Reflecting this story, the ceiling incorporates nearly 5,000 suspended light points at different heights, evoking a starry sky, complemented by circular lamps representing the moon. The result is an enveloping nocturnal atmosphere that becomes an essential part of the architectural experience.
The same design language extends outdoors, where the service islands transform into metal structures that rise like trees from the planters. Their canopies hold hanging vegetation that provides shade and creates intimate gathering spaces.
Katari Plaza stands as a contemporary bar where brand storytelling, architectural innovation, and parametric design converge. The project translates a corporate identity into a sensory spatial experience, transforming the simple act of sharing a beer into a journey filled with character, nature, and vitality.
