The Kasumigaseki Building plazas are located in the heart of downtown Tokyo where government as well as major private business offices are concentrated. Due to large grade changes, the retail entrance for the building entries occurs at different but connected levels--the lower street level being Zelkova plaza.Zelkova plaza at street level serves as the main entrance to Kasumigaseki Building and Tokyo Club Building. Consisting of mature Zelkova trees, a simple circular timber deck, public seating, as well as a wedge-shaped mist fountain of natural rock. A "light moat" at the plaza edge is a 21st century reinterpretation of the historical moats that once defined this area and a light wedge wall gives a new dramatic definition to the plaza's edge. The space attracts shoppers and office workers as well as passerby for a moment of relief from the surrounding urban context.Central plaza serves as a new entrance plaza to the Kasumigaseki building, Tokyo's first highrise and architectural landmark. A series of geometric landscape elements take their shapes from the dynamic dialogue between building geometries. Cafes and shops keep the space fresh and alive with activity. A parade of distinctive light wands marches toward the plaza from three neighborhood and subway directions as strong visual markers that imply direction through their architectural form and night-time lighting effects. Animated fountains, distinctive paving and planting patterns and dynamic lighting effects reinforce these settings as vibrant public spaces.
